Yesterday we welcomed a group of 30 people who were participating in Durham University’s Summer School. A flying visit, really, but because the theme of the week was Victorians, they could not have visited a better place! After a quick cup of tea the group (some of whom came from as far afield as Denmark, the United States and Saffron Walden) had a few minutes for a chat with staff and some board members. One lady asked if women were permitted to attend lectures in the early days of the Society. The answer is a happy yes, as recorded in the Lit & Phil’s archive. Ladies were, in fact, were entitled to half price tickets!
